‘Purrpalanji’ (skinny bush banana, Rhyncharrhena linearis) is a twining climber with thin leaves and pink-brown flowers. Its long, slender, edible pods can grow up to 20 cm and, like ‘yuparli’ (bush banana, Marsdenia australis), most parts of the plant are eaten except the woody stems. It grows rapidly after rain and is highly fire tolerant.

The Purrpalanji Jukurrpa (Skinny Bush Banana Dreaming) comes from Pikilyi (Vaughan Springs), a large waterhole and natural spring west of Yuendumu near Mount Doreen. Napangardi/Napanangka women and Japangardi/Japanangka men are the kirda (owners) of this Dreaming, while Nangala women and Jangala men are the kurdungurlu (custodians).

At Pikilyi, Napangardi and Napanangka women gather ‘purrpalanji’ and ‘yuparli’ in parraja (coolamons). The plants are cooked in hot ashes to remove their acidic taste. This Dreaming is specific to Pikilyi and does not travel to other sites. Pikilyi is also connected to a number of other important Dreamings, including bush banana, blue mallee seed, cockatoo, and the two snakes Jukurrpa, in which Napangardi and Napanangka women pick lice from the snakes living in the waterhole.

In Warlpiri painting, traditional iconography is used to describe these stories. Curved lines represent the long, slender edible pods of the purrpalanji plant.

About Aboriginal Contemporary

Aboriginal Contemporary has an enviable reputation for quality, service and ethical trading; not just with our customers but with the art centres from whom we source our work.

This is in no small part due to owner Nichola Dare’s regular trips to some of the most remote parts of Australia and her ability to build relationships with art centres and artists, based on mutual trust and respect. Nichola’s time in Australia’s Western Desert, The Kimberley, APY Lands and Arnhem Land has also given her a deep understanding of the country and culture at the heart of the art we sell.
