Acrylic on Canvas

Tjitji is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Aboriginal artist Miriam Baadjo, associated with the Balgo art community in Western Australia. Measuring 121.9 × 101.6 cm, the painting depicts a Tingarri Dreaming story passed down by her uncle, Wimmitji Tjapangarti.

Set in Tjatjati, north of Jupiter Well, the work relates to a creation story involving two sacred eggs, Maparn healers and the emergence of two children. The painting reflects the cultural knowledge and ancestral stories passed down through Miriam's family.

Story from the certificate of authenticity:

Miriam has beautifully illustrated a story passed down by her Uncle Wimmitji, set in Tjatjati, north of Jupiter Well.

At the heart of the painting, two sacred eggs take centre stage, sung into being by Marparn men (healers) during a powerful Tingarri Dreaming ceremony. As they chanted, they called upon the native cat spirit near a sacred rock hole, also depicted at the centre of the artwork. From this ceremony, two babies emerged from the eggs, marking a profound moment of creation. Surrounding them, the oval shapes represent the Marparn men, honouring their role in this sacred event.

About Aboriginal Contemporary

Aboriginal Contemporary has an enviable reputation for quality, service and ethical trading; not just with our customers but with the art centres from whom we source our work.

This is in no small part due to owner Nichola Dare’s regular trips to some of the most remote parts of Australia and her ability to build relationships with art centres and artists, based on mutual trust and respect. Nichola’s time in Australia’s Western Desert, The Kimberley, APY Lands and Arnhem Land has also given her a deep understanding of the country and culture at the heart of the art we sell.
