Acrylic on Canvas

Minyurrpa (Cat. 731-24) is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Geraldine Nowee, a Kukatja Aboriginal artist from Wirrimanu (Balgo) in Western Australia.

Measuring 182.9cm x 121.9cm, the painting depicts Minyurrpa, her mother's Country between Jupiter Well and the Canning Stock Route in the Western Desert.

The curved lines represent the sand dunes of this landscape, while the intricate dotting depicts the abundance of seeds found throughout the region. Circular forms represent traditional grinding stones used to prepare seeds for making bush damper.

Born in Derby in 1977, Geraldine is the daughter of senior lawman and artist Brandy Tjungurrayi and artist Nowee Nangala. She began painting in 2002, drawing on the cultural knowledge and Tjukurrpa stories passed down through her family. Her paintings frequently reference the flowers, seeds and bush foods associated with her Country.

Story from the certificate of authenticity:

Geraldine is painting her mother's country, Minyurrpa, between Jupiter Well and the Canning Stock Route.  The various curved lines are the sand dunes in the country, the dots illustrate the abundance of seeds found in the area, and the circles represent the grinding stones, used to grind down the seeds to make bush damper.

About Aboriginal Contemporary

Aboriginal Contemporary has an enviable reputation for quality, service and ethical trading; not just with our customers but with the art centres from whom we source our work.

This is in no small part due to owner Nichola Dare’s regular trips to some of the most remote parts of Australia and her ability to build relationships with art centres and artists, based on mutual trust and respect. Nichola’s time in Australia’s Western Desert, The Kimberley, APY Lands and Arnhem Land has also given her a deep understanding of the country and culture at the heart of the art we sell.
