Lyaapa-Lyaapa Lyupara

To the custodians of the West MacDonnell Ranges Tjurritja or Tjoritja refers to the caterpillar dreaming that travels east from Alice Springs to Glen Helen. This is Reinhold Inkamala’s Country, which he paints with deep respect and passion.

The legacy of the great Albert Namitjira is there to see in his work. But in contrast to Namatjira’s watercolours, Inkamala moves the Aboriginal landscape tradition forward, painting the folding ranges of Mount Sonder (Rrutjipma), the native bush and black cockatoos in striking acrylics on canvas.

Reinhold often paints with his sister, also a recognised artist, and consults his uncle to deepen his understanding of their landscape and Country. His father was a well known horseman, famous for breaking wild horses for the station and “Lyaapa-Lyaapa Lyupara” includes several works honouring this tradition.

Aboriginal Contemporary is proud to bring this unique exhibition to Sydney. For some it may be a first exposure to Aboriginal landscape painting. You couldn’t hope for a better introduction.
